Most regulation concerning the growing of vines and winemaking in Portugal derives from European Union directives. The bodies whose functions have a national scope are responsible for controlling the wine sector and establishing a connection between the European Union, the Government and other international organisations in the sector.
Wine committees and institutes (such as Port or Madeira) have a regional field of action and control a region’s vine and wine production in a way to preserve the wine’s quality and maintain the region’s identity.
