Wine exports from Portugal’s Alentejo region to Angola have increased significantly over the last few years, with the Angolan market becoming the second-largest importer of Alentejo wines, the region’s wine commission said.

According to Comissão Vitivinícola Regional Alentejana (CVRA), Alentejo wine exports to Angola increased by 77.9 percent in volume in 2005, against the previous year.

Also according to CVRA in the first half of the year, exports to Angola more than doubled, with a rise of 100.4 percent, as compared with the same period of 2005.

Despite continued growth in other export markets for Alentejo wine, according to the CVRA, in just two years Angola rose from fifth to second place in the ranking of main importers of wine from the Alentejo region.

Speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa, the president of the CVRA, Joaquim Madeira said that the Angolan market was, “one of the main focuses of the Portuguese wine sector,” noting that it was a country with a strong and increasing taste for quality wines from Alentejo.

Brazil is the main importer of Alentejo wines followed by Angola and the United States.
