In 2011 Angola imported around 4.2 million litres of wine from Portugal's Alentejo region, which almost doubled the amount imported within a year, Maria Amélia Vaz da Silva, of the Alentejo Vinegrowing Commission (CVRA), told Angolan daily newspaper O País.
Declining to give figures, "which are confidential between producers and importers", Silva preferred to focus on the number of litres, saying that from 2010 to 2011 the amount almost doubled from 2.3 million to 4.2 million.

On the sidelines of a wine tasting event held in Luanda, focused on hotel and restaurant professionals, as well as from supermarkets and specialist shops, Silva added that Angolan imports of Alentejo wines were very important to the Portuguese region’s economy.

"Angola is our main market, it is a country where Alentejo wines are very much appreciated and this is growing gradually in terms of appreciation of good quality wines", she said.

The CVRA was established in 1989 and is the certifying body for DOC Alentejo wines and regional Alentejo wines. It is responsible for promoting Alentejo Wines in the Portuguese market and in international markets.

Its work is funded by the sale of certification seals included on the Alentejo wine labels.
