Origin Riparia x Berlandieri
Young Branch End Semi-open, low density of prostrate hairs. Low anthocyanin pigmentation on the edge.
Young leaf Green. Strong density of erect hairs on the lower page of the fourth expanded leaf. No anthocyanin pigmentation of the first six leaves.
Shoot Low density of erect hairs. Purple red nodes and red internodes on the dorsal side and green ones on the ventral side. No anthocyanin pigmentation of the buds.
Tendrils Long. Discontinuous regular distribution with 02 formula.

Adult leaf Cuneiform, medium and whole. Medium green with low anthocyanin pigmentation in the main ribs. Flat blade, low blistering and generalised undulation. Medium, rectilinear teeth. Wide petiolar sinus, sometimes with its bottom limited by the main rib. Upper page with erect hairs on the ribs. Lower page with medium density of erect hairs between the ribs and strong density on the ribs. Strong density of erect hairs on the petiole.
Round, plain, dark brown with low density of erect hairs.
Characteristics 161-49 C is a low to medium vigour rootstock. It provides regular fructification of the grape variety and advances the ripening of grapes. It is a good producer of wood and its response to rooting is average. It has a good response to local grafting, but hand grafting is usually not well succeeded. 161-49 C is very resistant to limestone, bearing up to 25% active limestone without showing chlorosis. Concerning the Meloidogynae type of nematodes, its resistance is insufficient. This rootstock bears moisture and has a reasonable resistance to drought. It is indicated only to permeable limestone and clayey soils. It is not indicated to compact clayey soils.
