Desde Setembro que o Douro, esse "espaço de eleição", regressou às páginas dos jornais e às temáticas das conferências. Comemoram-se os 250 anos de um acto político de D. José, inspirado pelo Marquês de Pombal a criação no Douro de uma das primeiras zonas vinícolas de denominação de origem controlada.
Vale a pena comemorar? Penso que sim, porque os actos de clarividência política - que por cá tendem a escassear - merecem celebração. E porque, independentemente das vicissitudes e abusos historicamente registados ao abrigo daquela decisão inicial, nela reside a origem de um dos poucos produtos de excelência em que Portugal integra a elite mundial mais qualificada; não vale a pena citar os prémios internacionais, os "vintage" míticos, a crescente afirmação nos mercados mais exigentes ou o saber acumulado e combinado de produtores e enólogos para se perceber que temos no Douro um (infelizmente) raríssimo exemplo nacional de "cluster" de competitividade mundial.
