Bacalhôa Wines, which was founded in 1922 under the designation João Pires & Sons, has developed over the years into one of the most innovative wine producers in Portugal today.

The company started out in wine production using grapes from the Palmela region. It was during the 1970's that a new driving force turned the company around, through the introduction of the latest modern technologies, both in terms of viticulture and oenology. This brought Bacalhôa Wines to the forefront of national top quality wine-producing companies.

In 1998, Comendador José Berardo became the principal shareholder and continued the company's mission, investing in the planting of new vines, the modernization of the wineries and in the acquisition of new properties, also initiating a partnership with the Lafitte Rothschild Group on the Quinta do Carmo estate.
