Portuguese Food and Wine contest Saturday

Many social, cultural, gastronomical, and benefit events are taking place at the Hudson Portuguese Club in the next few weeks, which really shows that the Club and the community are quite well and alive. This Saturday, Feb. 27, is the Annual Homemade Wine and Ethnic Appetizer Tasting and Contest. This year there will also be a ?biscoito? (cookie) contest. The 2010 Scholarship Dinner will take place on March 6. Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m which will include Portuguese soup, roasted chicken, shrimp Mozambique, rice, vegetables, dessert buffet, and coffee. Entertainment will be provided by Nilton Freitas. Tickets are $25.00 for adults and $15.00 for children up to twelve years of age. On March 12 the various Portuguese-American organizations are sponsoring a dinner dance to raise money to help the Haitian people. The menu will include soup, fish and chips, chicken marsala, “mal-assadas” (fried dough), and coffee. Tickets are just $20, $10 for children under 12. All proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to help the Haitian people. For tickets please contact any of the Portuguese-American organizations or call the Club at 978-567-1929. By the way, local singer Arlindo Andrade as well as David Loureiro from New Bedford will perform at this benefit event, and dancing music will also be provided by D J Chaves.
“Fado” fans will have the opportunity to attend a spectacular session of the national song of Portugal on Sunday, March 14 at the Club. Lunch, which includes wine, will be served at 1:oo p.m. followed by the fado singing show. “Fadistas,” (fado singers) include Ana Sofia Varela, Rosa Maria, and Carlos Pocinho. The latter will sing Coimbra fados. They will be accompaniedby Carlos Gonsalves on the guitar and Lelo Nogueira on the viola. Gonsalves played for Amália Rodrigues, Portugal’s greatest fado singer of the twentieth century, for 32 years. These “fadistas” are coming directly from mainland Portugal, and they will have two performances, one in Hudson and another in Florida. On Saturday, March 20 The Club is sponsoring an impromptu singing performance featuring Gilberto Sousa, António Resendes, José Custódio, and Eduardo Papoula. Tickets for the “cantoria ao desafio” evening are $30.00 which will also include dinner and wine (with the meal). Please contact any of the people listed above for tickets.
UMass Dartmouth will be offering the seventeenth annual Summer Program in Portuguese from July 7 to August 6. Courses will range from Intensive Elementary Portuguese to Advanced Grammar and Syntax to Portuguese-American literature and Diasporas and Globalization in Lusophone Literatures and Cultures.
