The sale of Portuguese wine to China almost doubled in 2011 for the second year running, to 8.23 million euros, after bringing in 4.3 million euros in 2010, the manager of Vini Portugal for Asia and Africa, Sónia Fernandes said Thursday in Beijing.
Speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa, Fernandes said that, "prospects are very good given that by 2015 China is expected to be one of the world’s largest consumers of wine".

Fernandes travelled to china this week to prepare for forthcoming promotional activities by Vini Portugal in Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities.

"China is one of our priority markets. The main difficulty is distribution", she noted adding that even so, "this market is growing very quickly," and there are already three Portuguese companies (Sogrape, Enoport and Enoforum) with offices in Shanghai, the biggest and most cosmopolitan Chinese city, with a population of over 20 million.

"Just a decade ago, China almost didn’t make it onto the list of the top 25 export countries and it is now in 13th place and, outside Europe, is in fifth place, after Angola, the United States, Brazil and Mozambique," Fernandes said.
